NEW HERDSIRES

At this year’s SEPA Show, the buzz was about a young Junior Herdsire owned by Rejniaks’ Alpacas.  We were told that “Buckskin” had the best fleece in the show and we just had to go see for ourselves.  Comments like:  “Unbelievable soft crimp” “  His crimp goes from his nose to his toes!”  Well, we now own Buckskin - the grandson of the famous, Leon, the son of The Portland Kidd along with the notorious Hemingway on his mother’s side.  We were delayed an hour after the show from people coming up to us just to see and feel Buckskin’s fleece.

In addition to Buckskin, we purchased a Herdsire   in July – a full Peruvian – SPS Peruvian Cognac.  His Sire is the famous “BlackOut” owned by Stachowski and his Dam is Delaccoa.

NEW WATER HUTS

In our last issue, we mentioned installing automatic waterers.  We now have built “huts” over them to help protect the water from the sun and dirt.  They have also kept the water cool all summer long.

  Water Huts

One for the Females, one for the Junior Herdsires, and one for the Herdsires.  (The other waterer is under the protection of a shed in the lower female section.)

STOP THAT KICKING!

Does your alpaca kick?  We were told of a way to stop them.  Just place a piece of metal behind them and touch them to make them kick.  The bang scares them and they stop kicking.  Dale tried this on our “kicker” and . . . he kicked, it banged, he kicked again, it banged.  The third time, Dale just could not get him to kick!  Success!  He still kicks among his pals, but that’s okay with us.

MARTY McGEE CLINIC - Sponsored by PAOBA

Kim and Dale attended a 2-day clinic hosted by Shasta Springs on 9/4 & 9/5.  The techniques Marty taught are going to be very beneficial, especially the tip on how to funnel our herd into the barn.  Looks like we’re going to be installing more fence --- that always makes Dale happy!

ALPACA SALES

We have sold two of our alpacas.  Frostbite (Dolly’s cria this May) and Chatham (a gelded male).  For those of you who have visited our farm, I’m sure you know Chatham.  He is a wonderful PR animal who kushed on command and absolutely loved all the attention he could get from visitors.  The kids all loved him because they could easily lead him around and even do the obstacle course.  He has been sold locally to some wonderful people, so we can visit him when we want.

We have one terrific female cria left to sell, Peruvian Chardonnay.  She is the daughter of Forever Amber, one of our top breeders with great lineage.  Chardonnay's grandfather is “Emilio” – the highest rated alpaca in the second import (he is owned by Magical Farms).  Her father is Phydeau, owned by Alpaca Farms.  Char is listed now for $8,000 until this January, and then her price will be $10,000.

NEW PASTURE

We expanded the pasture for Barnaby and Blackjack – another ½ acre.  They are truly enjoying their new field!

NEW LLAMA

We purchased another female llama (Tootsie) to give our female llama,Gin-Gin, a “pal” - the two are constantly hanging out together in the field.
