IgG TESTING

Any newborn cria that fails to suckle and therefore doesn’t get colostrum is in danger of failure of passive transfer of immunity. Unless this is addressed the newborn may be prey to potentially fatal infections. The DVM Rapid Test helps us identify any cria who might benefit from a plasma supplementation. With all the crias being born, we want to ensure that our crias are as healthy as possible which far outweighs the cost of buying the IGG testing equipment.

FECAL TESTING

Fecal Exams are important because it allows us to identify any Alpacas with a particular problem that might grow into a herd parasite problem. We have been trained at hands-on seminars and we have the necessary testing equipment to ensure safety in our herd.

Probiotics – Are They Beneficial?

By Dr. Heather Henry

Probiotics simply stated are the “good bacteria” for the gastrointestinal system. It does not matter whether you are considering humans, simple stomach animals or ruminants – they can all benefit from probiotics.

As a veterinarian, I have a tendency to recommend probiotics often when an alpaca is experiencing diarrhea, stress, off feed or has other gastrointestinal disorders. However, probiotics can actually be very beneficial when administered to healthy alpacas on a daily basis. The theory behind daily probiotics is that by giving a constant dose of good bacteria, the bad bacteria will be “outnumbered.” There is also evidence to support the belief that probiotics administered on a regular basis strengthens the immune system in general. Alpacas that are showing often are easily stressed and exposed to a variety of pathogens. Therefore, I recommend that the show string start receiving probiotics prior to the show season.
